How Chingu scaled global cohorts 10x faster with Mailjet’s API + templates

Chingu is a U.S.-based Class C corporation that helps developers transform what they’ve learned into the real world experience needed to land jobs. This is done by pairing them in remote, six-week “Voyage” team projects where they work as Developers, UI/UX Designers, Product Owners, or Scrum Masters. Using Agile/Scrum they blend technical skills and “soft” skills to become job ready. Chingu now supports participants in more than 75 countries and helps them form strong global networks.

Challenge: Manual processes bottlenecked a global program

Before adopting Sinch Mailjet, Chingu’s co-founder handled cohort communications manually – copying email addresses into ad-hoc lists, crafting individual messages, and sending them through standard mail clients. As enrollments surged into the hundreds per Voyage, this approach became unmanageable: onboarding links arrived late, reminders were missed, and hours of staff time were eaten up.

“Managing hundreds of emails by hand was exhausting and unsustainable.” — Jim Medlock, Co-Founder

Delays and missed messages risked derailing projects and losing participants, threatening Chingu’s mission to deliver a seamless, professional experience. The team urgently needed a scalable solution to match its growing impact.

Chingu turned to Sinch Mailjet, combining easy-to-build templates with developer-friendly APIs:

  • Drag-and-drop templates allowed non-technical volunteers to create branded messages in minutes.
  • Transactional Email & SMTP Relay ensured critical credentials, Discord invites, and sprint reminders were delivered instantly.
  • Contact management kept cohort lists synced with Chingu’s Discord and internal databases.
  • A lightweight REST API triggered customized emails automatically when teams formed, projects launched, or deadlines shifted.

Chingu adopted Mailjet to streamline manual processes, enabling faster onboarding and more consistent communications. Looking ahead, the team plans to explore Automation Journeys to replace home-grown scripts and further simplify workflows.

Results: Reliable sends, engaged cohorts, future scalability

  • Hours saved: pre-built templates and segmented lists turned multi-hour tasks into a quick review and send.
  • Consistent delivery: Approximately 10,000 monthly emails reliably land in inboxes with a “Good” deliverability rating – keeping every Voyage on schedule.
  • Sustained engagement: pairing Mailjet broadcasts with Discord announcements helps maintain active participation across six-week projects.
